Derry aims to pay homage to her Louisiana roots with her new restaurant – Roots Southern Table. She has been famous for her mouthwatering duck-fat fried chicken and now she has much more on her Roots' menu.

She plans to source the ingredients from nearby farms to keep the ingredients as local as possible. We are looking at farms like Cooper Farms and Profound Farms as a good source for Derry.

Derry reportedly said that Roots Southern Table is more of a modern southern approach. She uses ingredients from the local area and gardens. She is from Louisiana and often had a great summer with vegetables of the season. You can see this influence in her menu.

The menu has sections, which include "Starters" like grits and shrimp, jalapeno cheese grits placed on top of the sausage-tomato stew, and other items like Cast-iron cornbread and Southern greens.

There are veggie-forward items as well, like stuffed zucchini flowers and spring pea salad. You would want to try the amazing duck-fat fried potatoes too.

Derry serves the duck-fat fried chicken in the family-style, with watermelon rind, drop biscuits, and homemade hot sauces.

In the super section, you will find Derry's signature crawfish boil ravioli and jerk lamb chop.

You can expect signature cocktails like the LeVeau cocktail - this is similar to the Hemingway daiquiri. You can also try the Kool-Aid cocktail. It is a mix of hibiscus tea, Tito's vodka, and strawberry syrups (homemade). Derry adds a sugar cane piece to it.

Roots Southern Table originally opened about five years ago, before her Roots Chicken Shack at Legacy Hall. She said the Mustang Station at Farmers Branch approached her at the right time to open a branch at this central location.

What Not to Expect

What you cannot expect though are cheese dishes and any mac. Derry explains why saying it is an ode to her family’s origins. Her belief is that we eat the bounties of our land, so it is more about the area we live in. Hence, in Carolina, you get different goods, and in Louisiana, you get different food.

Visit Roots Southern Table and share your opinions with us. We would love to hear from you.

I'm going to check it out, and you should too!
