Cosmic Café Has Shut Down

One last meal at Cosmic Café was on 17 October 2021. It is was situated on Oak Lawn Avenue. This place started just randomly over a cup of chai when Kumar Pallana and Parveen Sachdev met. Cosmic Cafe has been serving the people of Dallas for over a quarter of the century. There have been a lot of people visiting this café over the years and seeing it close is quite sad for most people.

They mostly served vegetarian food at extremely low rates. Parveen Sachdev had this small meditation area on the upper floor. Sachdev grinned and said he missed hippies a few years ago when we asked if he ever felt compelled to conform to the rapidly changing Uptown environment.

Over the years, Cosmic Cafe made its mark in the area as the most easygoing unpretentious vegetarian restaurant. Many vegans in the are have visited this café at some point in time and remember it as a peaceful and welcoming place to have a cup of chai or coffee.

Pallana has often spoken about his interest in moving to Hollywood and envisioned himself having a brighter career. He did pop up on the screen as Mr. Pagoda in "The Royal Tenenbaums" by Wes Anderson. Before this appearance, Pallana had also made an appearance in "Rushmore" as Mr. Little Jeans. Soon after he appeared using his own name in "Bottle Rocket." Pallana told Sachdev to take over the cafe on Oak Lawn so he could pursue his career.

The eccentric restaurant, with its renowned ornate, excessive decor, has prospered for decades with a menu of Indian and vegetarian cuisine. Even as Uptown developed around it, it remained a haven of art, calmness, and reflection.

Sachdev is closing the eatery, according to CultureMap, because he has his "own small fantasy to smell the roses." The restaurant's final supper will be served on Sunday, and the venue will afterward be used as a charity yoga class. According to sources, the reason for closing the Cosmic Cafe is that Parveen Sachdev decided to expand the meditation area. In some ways, this is a good thing because most people in the area appreciated the meditation aspect of this cafe and visited it to find peace and inspiration.

We will likely write more about the new yoga center so stay tuned to learn more about the upcoming yoga class here. Feel free to leave your comments below.
