“Young and the Restless” Star Jerry Douglas Died At 88

Jerry Douglas, who starred in "The Young and the Restless" for nearly 30 years as attractive family patriarch John Abbott, died on Tuesday. His 89th birthday was just after three days.

Douglas is survived by his three children and two granddaughters, as well as his second wife, actress Kymberly Bankier.

After college, he went to New York to study acting with Uta Hagen and Los Angeles to study with Jeff Corey. Douglas worked on projects with Josh O'Connell as a screenwriter and dramatist. He was an ardent reader and a lifelong golfer.

Gerald Rubenstein was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 12, 1932, to Eastern European immigrants. At the age of 18, he enrolled at Brandeis University with the aim of acquiring an economics law degree. According to his official IMBD bio, he gave up the books and began auditioning eight months into law school.

He made his final appearance on the CBS daytime drama that started in 1981 and ended in 2016, Douglas played the father of main characters Jack, Ashley, and Tracey Abbott in approximately 900 episodes of the CBS serial opera.

In a statement, executive producer of "The Young and the Restless," Anthony Morina said, "Our show was lucky to have an actor of his quality join the Y&R cast and introduce the public to the renowned Abbott family."

"As the patriarch of the Abbott family, John Abbott's commitment to the Y&R heritage is being felt today." He'll be terribly missed."

He was born Jerry Rubenstein. He was a native of Chelsea, MA. He got a football scholarship in Brandeis University but he chose to go for a career in acting after his graduation. He has hundreds of credits in his career, a few films include Mommie dearest, JFK and the few amazing tv series would be Barnaby Jones and Melrose Place.

He was well known for his role as the chairman of Jabot Cosmetics and a single father on "The Young and the Restless," which he joined in 1982. Even though the Abbott character died in 2006, Douglas continued to appear on the show in 2016 as his ghost.

Douglas is survived by his three children and two granddaughters, as well as his second wife, actress Kymberly Bankier.
